This is the dramatic moment a father and his child were rescued from a flooded home after heavy rain in Thailand.

The family were sleeping inside their house when there was a sudden flash flood pouring down from the mountains in Chiang Rai province on August 11 around 5 am.

To escape the gushing deluge, the residents climbed up the roof of their home while desperately calling their neighbours for help.

When they were found almost an hour later, the rescue team brought backhoes which they used to wade into the water and carry them one by one to safer ground.

Rescue worker Rak Pichai said: ‘The water from the mountain flowed to the river which was swollen and went directly into the village.

‘We were able to save everyone in the area thanks to the help of concerned neighbours who assisted us. The person who drove the backhoe was a local who knew the area more.’

The affected families in the village were taken to evacuation centres and given food and medical help. They would remain in the shelters until the weather condition improved.

Aside from having scratches and bruises, no one was reported seriously hurt in the incident including the family that was trapped on their roof.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
