Memorial to honour woman whose death sparked nationwide protests in South Africa

A memorial was held outside the Clareinch post office in Cape Town to mark two years since the death of University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana who was murdered by a postal worker. Her death along with incidents of femicide sparked a series of nationwide protests across South Africa which trended on social media as #AmInext .

Katie Christie, a resident of Claremont, organised this year's memorial. Christie's daughter as a friend of Uyinene and were the same age.

Western Cape MEC for Social Development, Shana Fernandez, said women are still being murdered every three hours on South Africa. She aid the vicious cycle is being perpetuated despite the outrage.

In 2019 President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a state of emergency to address and combat gender based violence. Despite these measures, South Africa still has one of the highest rates of femicide in the world.
