Typhoon Chanthu brought heavy rain to the northwest area of the Philippines as it brushed the archipelago on Friday morning.

Footage shows heavy rainfall from the storm, locally named Kiko, drenching a residential area in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur province on September 10.

Chanthu, which was previously designated a super typhoon, has slightly weakened but is still a formidable storm with maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h and gustiness of 240 km/h, reported the state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The national weather institution has warned of potential torrential rains and widespread floods in the Philippines' northernmost islands.

Chanthu is currently moving towards Taiwan and is forecast to hit the country this weekend. Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau has raised a sea warning as the typhoon approaches its southeastern coast.
