Footage shows residents being evacuated from the aftermath of a the Mount Semeru volcano eruption in Indonesia which killed at least 13 people and left thousands more displaced.

Homes in Lumajang province, East Java, were covered in thick layers of volcanic ash following the eruption which sent clouds of smoke more than 40,000ft into the air on Saturday December 4 at around 3pm local time.

Indonesia’s National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) said in a statement Sunday the eruption had wounded 98 others, including two pregnant women, after it covered villages with ash and left people to run from billowing clouds of debris.

Indah Amperawati, deputy head of Lumajang, said at least 300 families were evacuated following the eruption.

Search and rescue efforts were ongoing throughout Sunday as authorities converted schools, mosques and other public buildings into evacuation centres.
