HMS Northumberland In The News After It's Sonar Was In Collision With Russian Submarine in North Atlantic in 2021

A British Naval ship has been in collision with the Russian Submarine in the Atlantic and the incident was recorded by a TV film crew late last year.

The team from Channel 5 was filming a documentary when they recorded the collision with the ship’s towed sonar array.

It has just docked at Portland Port on the Dorset Coast which was a former Royal Navy Base. The port still provides back-up facilities for the Royal Navy and The Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service.

HMS Northumberland (F238) is a Royal Navy Frigate (Type 23) named after the Duke of Northumberland. The ship was originally designed for anti-submarine warfare.

Based at Devonport at the Royal Navy Dockyard Plymouth Devon.

The ship has 4.5 inch guns and has numerous anti-aircraft and anti-ship missile systems plus 'Sting Ray' torpedoes.

It also carries a Westland Wildcat helicopter that can be equipped with anti-submarine torpedoes.
