A massive plume of smoke was seen erupting from Mount Etna in Italy on Thursday.

Europe’s highest and most active volcano roared back into action in recent weeks, spewing lava and ash high over the Mediterranean island of Sicily.

The footage filmed on June 2 shows the mountain from a distance with smoke rising above and then several close shots of the peak with intense black smoke steaming from the crater.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etneo Observatory, announces that from
17.00 GMT a continuous ash emission started from the SE Crater, forming
a plume of volcanic ash that affects the SSE sector of the volcano.
In addition, an inspection carried out in the afternoon by INGV staff continues
the effusive activity produced by the SE Crater, the most advanced lava fronts are attested to
about 2100 m.
From the seismic point of view the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor, while showing a
slight decrease starting from 16:00 GMT, currently remains in range
high values, with a tendency to further decrease. The source of the tremor
volcanic is located below the SE Crater at an altitude of about 3000 m a.s.l.
Infrasonic activity is low.
Regarding the deformations of the ground, the stations of the GNSS and tilt networks do not
show significant changes.
