Conscientious parents - Black Swans caring for their young cygnets

Buy video

Black Swans (Cygnus atratus) occur over much of Australia and are only absent from the driest areas and the north-eastern Tropics. Black Swans are almost entirely vegetarian, and eat a variety of waterweeds, grasses and seeds. Black Swans are usually monogamous and are excellent parents – pulling up waterweeds for their cygnets and closely protecting them from predators when on land. This family of seven Black Swans were grazing on the mown lawn on the southern edge of Herdsman Lake, west of Perth In Western Australia. The parents supervised the feeding cygnets, then led them into the lake shallows where they ate aquatic plants and drank.
