Schoolchildren had to ride an overloaded boat to school on the first day of in-person classes after Tropical Storm Ma-On caused torrential floods in the Philippines on Monday.

Video shows the students carrying umbrellas to shield themselves from the rain as a man ferried them across the deluge on an overcrowded dinghy in Barangay Taliptip, Bulacan province on August 22.

Resident Joan Sinabianan said the kids were being shuttled in batches, with more waiting on the banks to be taken to the other side.

State weather bureau PAGASA said Severe Tropical Storm Ma-On touched down in Isabela province at 10:30 am local time on August 22.

It brought heavy rains and floods in the country's north, triggering the suspension of classes and government work in the nation's capital and nearby provinces until August 24.

The storm has left the Philippine Area of Responsibility before dawn on Wednesday.

Disaster officials confirmed at least three people have died during Ma-On's onslaught.
