A bungling motorcycle rider using his phone was hit by a car at a junction in Thailand.

The man emerged from a u-turn slip road while tapping on his phone when the accident happened in Bangkok on December 6.

He overtook an approaching car and lost balance as the driver slammed the brakes behind him.

Dashcam footage shows the text-and-driving rider as he was nudged by the vehicle and fell to the ground.

The driver said: ‘I tried to get his attention but he was using his phone. I didn't realise that until I was near him.

‘Maybe he thought there were only a few cars around and was using his maps to navigate.

'But I still believe everyone should be alert on the road.'

The rider was not seriously hurt but his motorcycle had scratches from the incident.

Using phones while driving or riding a motorcycle in Thailand is illegal. Offenders face fines of up to 1,000 Baht (23.43 GBP) though the law is rarely enforced.

The country has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws as well as endemic corruption and chronic under-investment in infrastructure hamper the efforts.
