At least two people died while more than 50 are still missing after a landslide hit a campsite in Malaysia early Friday morning.

The avalanche struck the campground in Selangor state at 3 am local time, with at least 79 people caught in the falling debris.

The Selangor fire department said the landslide tumbled 100 feet above the campsite, burying a one-acre area near Father's Organic Farm on the outskirts of the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Footage shows several cars buried under soil while surrounded by flattened trees and tents.

Two people, including a child, have been found dead, and 23 were rescued safely. More than 50 are still missing.

In a statement, Malaysian minister for natural resources, environment and climate change Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said: 'I pray that the missing victims can be found safely soon.

'The rescue team has been working since early. I'm going down there today.'

Flood warnings have been raised over Selangor amid forecasts of torrential rain in the region. However, no rain or earthquakes were recorded prior to the landslide.

Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
