At least 36 people died in landslides triggered by heavy rains in southern Peru on February 6.

Footage shows the moment a flash flood roared down a neighbourhood road in the Secocha sector of Camana in the Arequipa department.

The torrent swept away mud and rocks as it surged in waves, terrifying onlookers who took shelter in balconies.

Local media reported that at least 36 were killed in the landslides, including five that died after their van was swept into a river by the floods.

Officials said some 2,000 families had been affected and 630 homes had been destroyed as they send in heavy machinery to clear debris blocking important roads.
