Two overbearing security guards have been sacked for allegedly slapping a tourist and cuffing him over a minor misunderstanding at a Thai pub.

Hot-headed bouncer Thongchai, 30, was filmed smacking the foreigner twice in the face 'for stealing a bottle of water' at The Club Khaosan along Bangkok's Khaosan Road, a popular nightlife strip for backpackers, shortly after midnight on February 25.

Another guard Krisada, 45, intervened as Thongchai tried to cuff the bewildered reveller, who claimed he thought the water was complimentary for guests.

The guards were summoned to the Chana Songkhram district police station for an explanation after footage spread of their alleged 'assault' on the bar-goer. Officers are also searching for the foreigner to obtain his testimony.

Police Colonel Sanong Saengmanee, superintendent of the Chana Songkhram police, said: 'We have invited security guards from entertainment venues along Khaosan Road to discuss the proper ways to implement security measures.'

The Club Khaosan has issued an apology, saying the staff involved have been axed 'effective immediately' following the incident. Club bosses said they have also filed an assault case on behalf of the tourist.

The club said it is imposing strict training on the remaining staff 'to ensure the highest standards of safety' for their customers.
