Zookeepers prepared a delicious buffet for an elephant to celebrate National Thai Elephant Day.

Staff arranged a feast of bananas, sugar cane, fresh grass, and seasonal fruit for the 41-year-old jumbo named Phang Jim at the Khon Kaen Zoo in Thailand on March 13.

The special day is celebrated to show the significance of elephants in Thai culture, and to promote awareness about their conservation.

Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy said that Phang Jim is currently the only elephant at the zoo.

Video shows the pachyderm happily gorging on the mound of fresh produce inside her enclosure.

Narongwit said Phang Jim was polite and friendly with staff and tourists, and invited visitors to come see her at the Khon Kaen Zoo.

Elephants are the national animal of Thailand.

The country has an estimated 2,000 Asian elephants living in the wild - down from 100,000 a century ago - and around 3,000 in captivity owned privately. In the wild they are seen wandering freely among protected forests, occasionally appearing on the roads that run through them.

There is sometimes conflict when they come into contact with humans on rural roads and in villages so wildlife rangers are tasked with monitoring their movements.
