A Chinese tea shop has been serving hot cuppas for 115 years.

K Mui Kee Tea house started in 1908 when the current owner's grandfather moved to Bangkok, Thailand from neighboring China.

The shop sold different types of tea - green, white, red, black, and purple, among others - and prepared them the traditional way for a more affordable price.

Footage shows dozens of jars and containers holding the dried leaves and herbs in front of the antique tea shop. The tea house also dried some of their ingredients including a ten-year-old orange peel inside a jar to infuse with their drinks.

The owner Nattaphol Hirunsaroj said: ‘I'm the third generation that's handling this shop. My grandfather came from the mainland and was of Teochew descent.

‘He's from the hill of Feng Huang. When it became difficult to make a living in China, he came to Thailand and settle here.'

Nattaphol added his grandfather left the mainland and worked with relatives for three years before starting a business of his own.

He said: ‘Back in the day, he would buy from the bigger stores and sell them in smaller compartments.'

With running the family business, the tea house owner said he had years of experience.

He said: ‘I understand the business and the nature of the tea. Tea has antioxidants, a mild bacterial agent, and fluoride. When you drink it after a meal, it soothes your throat.

‘When you drink tea, it stays on your cheeks and your throat. The first taste and smell are different for different types of tea. That's the charm of the tea leaf.'

After years of selling tea, Nattaphol recommends which is the best drink for customers, who often visit him with symptoms or specific effects they are looking for..

He said: ‘Some ask me which is the best tea and I would tell them, the best tea is the one you like while drinking.

‘Cheap or expensive, it doesn't matter. Some tell me that people would drink tea that costs more than a hundred thousand Thai baht per kilo, but if we drink the same thing as them, we may not be able to relate to each other.'

The hundred-year-old tea shop has regular customers but the younger generation and even some tourists started visiting them after starting pages online.

Nattaphol said: ‘Before I have regular customers but after the whole online thing like on Facebook, the new generation would follow on the internet. Now more people know the tea market and more teens are tasting the tea leaf.'
