The coastal town of Weymouth, UK, marked Memorial Day on May 29 with a tribute to the American soldiers who left the port during World War 2.

The US national anthem rang out as the town paid tribute to the thousands of American troops who departed Weymouth during D-Day.

The town also includes a special service each year at this US memorial when the UK marks Remembrance Day in November.

This Portland Stone memorial is to mark the fallen from military units like that of the US Rangers who departed from Weymouth and Portland on June 5 and 6 1944 for the beaches of Normandy.

Some 517,000 US troops left through the port town from camps around the local area. Taking with them some 144,000 vehicles and thousands of tons of supplies and ammunition for the largest amphibious landing ever.
