South African unions embark on national strike against job losses and privatisation

Cape Town, 6 July 2023: COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions), South Africa’s largest trade union federation, has embarked on a national strike to protest issues such as corruption, job losses, privatisation and budget austerity measures.

COSATU, which is an alliance partner of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), marched through the streets of Cape Town to the offices of the Western Cape Provincial Legislature as well as South Africa’s parliament to hand over memorandums.

Motlatsi Tsubane, the Western Cape chairperson of COSATU said: “Government must deal with corruption and crime. As we speak in our province, as we speak, this is a province which is very rife with crime. This is a province which is one would say is number one as far as crime the crime rate is concerned
