This is what Padang beach in Indonesia's West Sumatra looks like after the city was flooded in recent days.

"You can see tens of tons of trash consisting of plastic, wood and coconut piled up, covering the Padang beach. Tens of tons of the waste comes from rivers flooding canals that carry household waste," Newsflare's filmer, a local journalist, said of the mountains of waste, captured today.

Local resident Malika said: "Everyone should be aware not to throw their trash into the river, which damages the tourist city of Padang, when the river flows fast and carries the garbage into the estuary and the waves throw it onto the beach."

Malika added: "The pile of garbage really emits a pungent stench that makes tourists uncomfortable."

The piles of garbage also pose a risk to marine life.

Torrential rain has hit Padang since Thursday, July 14.
