At least 27 people died after a landslide due to torrential rains on the outskirts of Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, authorities reported today.

During the rainy season, these landslides are frequent in Yaounde, a city of about three million inhabitants surrounded by hills, covered with precarious housing.

The landslide occurred on Sunday night in Mbankolo, on the northwest outskirts of the capital, and was caused by the rupture of a dam that was retaining the waters of an artificial lake located higher up, according to public television CRTV.

"Yesterday (Sunday) we extracted 15 dead people and this morning we extracted eight. We continue searching," David Petatoa Poufong, second commander of the fire department, said Monday.

Minutes later, the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, reported the new death toll of 27.
