Three people were injured when a fairground ride collapsed in Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday evening.

The revellers were riding the 'Polipo' - an octopus-like attraction with spinning cars at the end of each tentacle - at the Siam Carnival Funfair on October 26.

However, one of the ride's hydraulic chokes reportedly malfunctioned, causing a tentacle to crash to the ground.

Police and paramedics responded to the incident near the Rama VIII bridge at 11 pm.

Local rescuers and Police Captain Worathon Imwittaya of the Bang Yi Khan Police Station said three people suffered sprains and abrasions from the accident.

He said: 'The owner's paperwork is being checked. If they were not authorised to operate the ride, they will be prosecuted. The ride must be regularly maintained. If the condition was not suitable, the owner could also have to pay damages for the medical costs of the injured people.'

The wounded were named as Piyawan Chansri, 24, Thanyarat Ploydee, 29, and Napak Traithanathanchai, 14. They were taken to the Chaophya Hospital for treatment.

Somchai Chaidee, 42, Siam Carnival Funfair's general manager, said: 'The ride had been imported from Italy and is equipped with a robust safety system. It was designed to halt in case of an accident, preventing anyone from being ejected from their seats. However, we found that a 50mm-thick steel bracket had cracked and caused the seat to fall.'

He said the rides had undergone routine testing before the amusement park opened, adding it was the first accident involving the Polipo.

The attraction has been permanently closed, and the fairground has agreed to shoulder the tourists' medical expenses.

Police said they were interviewing the injured people and reviewing videos of the incident.
