A magnitude 6.4 earthquake rattled residents in northern Thailand on Friday morning.

Footage shows shop staff fleeing when the tremors jolted the supermarket building in Chiang Rai province.

The tremor was centred near Keng Tung province in neighbouring Myanmar's Shan state and struck at a depth of nine kilometres at 8:37am local time, according to the Earthquake Surveillance Division of the Thai Meteorological Department.

Locals in northern Thai provinces, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Nan, and Bangkok, reported feeling the quake, which shook homes, knocked down bottles from grocery store shelves, and triggered school evacuations.

There have been no reports of severe damage so far. Authorities said they were surveying potential damage caused by the earthquake.
