This is the beautiful moment a boyfriend proposed to his girlfriend with a backdrop of thousands of candle-lit lanterns being released.

Footage shows the couple releasing a large paper lamp into the air before the man quickly went to the table and returned with a ring in Chiang Mai province, Thailand on November 27.

He knelt on one knee, revealing a small box with a ring to his partner amid a mesmerising sea of floating lanterns rising into the night sky at the Yi Peng Lantern Festival.

His marriage proposal was successful, and the soon-to-be husband and wife enjoyed the view of the glowing sky with a fireworks display.

The Yi Peng festival is an annual event celebrated in northern Thailand, primarily in Chiang Mai. It takes place on the full moon of the 12th month of the Lanna Lunar Calendar, usually in November.

The festival is steeped in ancient traditions and beliefs, marking the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the harvest season.
