The fifth World Media Summit comes at an opportune time and plays a vital role in providing the truth and presenting both sides of the story, making it "a really important international media summit," Iqbal Surve, chairman of South Africa's Independent Media, told Xinhua in a recent interview.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): IQBAL SURVE, Chairman of South Africa's Independent Media
"The World Media Summit comes at a very appropriate time, with those media organizations in the world that are interested in the truth and interested in a multipolar world are able to come together and share ideas in order to ensure that the world's population is able to hear the truth and, importantly, both sides of the story. So I think it is a really, really important occasion.
I think that the World Media Summit must become a summit which is the platform to put into place the sharing modules for the various media organizations. It's very critical that it does that."

Emphasizing the social responsibilities of the media, the chairman underscored the paramount importance of truth as the foundational principle for all media organizations.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): IQBAL SURVE, Chairman of South Africa's Independent Media
"It's when you communicate the facts, the truth and ideas, and issues of collaboration, peaceful coexistence, peaceful harmony, that is when you can make progress. And the media and the role of the media is absolutely critical in that communication. And so if we have one task only as a social responsibility, that task is to ensure that media must be a change agent in the world today, to promote a common humanity and a shared future and shared prosperity."
