The eruptive activity of Mount Marapi in West Sumatra province has increased again. In the past four days, the mountain in Agam Regency has erupted 10 times and blasted 119 times.

People living around Mount Marapi are asked to stay within 4.5km of the crater at the top of the mountain.

In the footage I filmed from Bukittinggi city on Thursday (8/2/2024), in addition to the eruption, Mount Marapi was also experiencing continuous gusts of volcanic ash.

PVMBG's Mount Marapi observation post in Bukittinggi recorded five eruptions and 35 gusts at the 2,891m mountain on Thursday.

The head of the PVMBG's Mount Marapi Eruption Emergency Response Team, Ugan Saing, said the height of the ash column had reached between 800 and 1,000 metres above the summit of Mount Marapi.

"We received information from the public through the WhatsApp group 'Marapi information' that volcanic ash had fallen in the Tanah Datar area, to the northeast," Saing added.
