Magpies were captured plucking the golden fur from the world's only captive brown panda in northern China.

The video was filmed in Xi'an City in Shaanxi Province on March 11.

The world's only captive brown panda Qizai was spotted basking lazily in the sun. Nearby, a magpie slowly approached, unabashedly reaching forward to pluck the golden fur from Qizai's body with its beak. It even called for its companions to join in the "plucking" session.

Qizai, however, seemed to have an exceptionally good temperament, showing no sign of being bothered by the magpie's "thieving" behavior.

According to staff members at the Qinling Four Treasures Scientific Park, this behaviour is termed as "feather theft" for birds. Magpies, in particular, begin breeding early, especially around early March.

In the early days of March, the temperature in the temperate or cold zones remains relatively low, prompting magpies to use some lining materials in their nests for better insulation, such as moss, lichen, or even some animal fur, which enhances the nest's thermal performance.

This behaviour has little to no impact on the giant panda and seems to be a way for the two species to coexist.
