An artificial intelligence robot, programmed to exhibit high enthusiasm, went viral for its bizarre walking style, reminiscent of an elderly grandmother. Dubbed "Grandma Robot" by amused spectators, its posture and movements sparked widespread attention and amusement.

The video was filmed at the Peking University in Beijing on April 20.

On April 24, the company responsible for producing the robot responded to its newfound fame. They explained that "Grandma Robot" was a creative concept developed by Professor Zhu Songchun, the dean of Beijing University's Intelligent Science department.

The robot is designed as an open platform capable of various programmed actions such as waving, greeting, and dancing. The peculiar "grandma-style" walk is primarily focused on stability and speed, ensuring that the robot can withstand pulling or dragging without falling and can even run and perform somersaults.

Priced at around 800,000 yuan (£88432.61), this feature-packed robot represents a significant investment.

From a professional standpoint, the development of this robot marks a technological innovation. It not only possesses the basic functionalities of humanoid robots but also performs more complex programmed movements.

Furthermore, it boasts high stability and speed, capable of handling various environmental challenges. These features demonstrate its technical advantages, although the hefty price tag of 800,000 yuan is likely to be a deterrent for many consumers, as it far exceeds the average household's budget.

Professor Zhu Songchun, the brain behind this creation, is an internationally renowned expert in computer vision, statistics, applied mathematics, and artificial intelligence.

He has won the prestigious Marr Prize in computer vision three times and returned to China in 2020 to serve as the dean of the Intelligent Science department at Beijing University.
