Talks on a truce in the Gaza conflict are making progress with Cairo intensifying contacts with all concerned parties, Egypt's Al-Qahera News reported on Thursday, quoting a high-ranking Egyptian source.
In a phone call with Egyptian Intelligence Chief Abbas Kamel, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh appreciated Egypt's role and expressed the movement's "positive spirit" in studying the ceasefire proposal.
Haniyeh also highlighted the positive attitude of Hamas towards the negotiation of a ceasefire agreement and said that Hamas' delegation will soon visit Egypt to further ceasefire talks in the Gaza Strip.
Qatar, Egypt and the United States are seeking to reach a deal for a prisoner exchange and a second ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, following the first one that ended last December.
Osama Hamdan, a Hamas politburo member, said in an interview with Lebanon-based al-Manar TV on Wednesday that negotiations will be halted if Israel launches an operation in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah.
On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken during their meeting in Jerusalem that Israel would not agree to a deal that would force an end to its operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
On Thursday, an Israeli airstrike hit regions of the Gaza Strip, killing five, including one child from the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.
