Royalist Town Crier Tony Appleton gave the wrong answer when HM The Queen asked him a question during her 90th birthday 'Windsor Walkabout' in April 2016.

“As The Queen crossed the road and approached me, Her Majesty pointed to one of my uniform badges that states ‘Royalist Town Crier’ and asked what it was.

I told her the badge represented the time I announced the birth of her grad-grandchildren . . .

Well that’s how I WISH THAT IT HAD HAPPENED!

But to tell the truth, I was so nervous to be spoken to by the Monarch that I told had I had proclaimed the birth of her grandchildren.

Her Majesty looked puzzled for a moment, expecting me to say Prince George and Princess Charlotte – her great-grandchildren, but then she smiled on realising my mistake.

It was so gracious of her, not wanting to embarrass me in front of the crowd.

I even gave an video interview immediately after repeating my mistake, and, it was not until two weeks later that I realised what I had done.

On reflection Her Majesty handled my mix up graciously without trying to correct me in front of everyone, one more reason to love our Queen.”

Background for the media:

Tony Appleton styles himself Royalist Town Crier and not Royal Town Crier because he has not been appointed the ancient post of Royal Crier, which dates back to William the Conquerer.

Mr Appleton, 82, who is offical town crier for Bury St Edmunds, Norfolk, and Romford, in the London Borough of Havering, does not and has never claimed to be The Royal's official town crier.

He carries out his Royal proclaimations pro bono, which include the births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte - well documented on YouTube - in a strictly unofficial capacity because of his love and service to the Queen.

This dates back to when he was a young sailor in the Royal Navy when she took the 'Spithead Review' of the Senior Service and he was aboard a destroyer - he went on to take part in the Suez Crisis and the tail end of the Korean War and proudly wears commemorative medals on his town crier uniform.

"If I was a fake would Her Majesty have approached and graciously spoke and smiled to me during her 'Windsor Walkabout' ? I think not."

Mr Appleton recent wrote an auto-biography 'Now or Never' donating a percentage to a medical charity which he supports.
