Alaskan Husky inside its kennel - Basecamp Trapper's Station, Spitzbergen
One of the attractions for visitors to Longyearbyen in Spitzbergen, part of the Svalbard Archipelago, is to visit the 90 Alaskan Huskies at the Basecamp Trapper's Station, a 15-minute drive out of town. Alaskan Huskies are not a pure dog breed, but instead are defined by their purpose – to be highly efficient sled dogs. They are the sled dog of choice – none of the pure Husky breeds can match them for speed or endurance. The Huskies are chained to small individual kennels but are very friendly and very keen to work. In summer visitors can go carting or dryland mushing, in which a team of Huskies pulls a cart with wheels rather than sled runners along the gravel road towards town. This Husky wasn't too interested in the visitors to the kennel area.
