One person was killed and one four seriously injured after an explosion sparked chaos at an airport in Bangkok this afternoon.

The workers were carrying an 860-pound (390kg) metal tank used for storing fire extinguisher chemicals when they dropped it at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand today (February 7).

A massive amount of pressure came out with a loud bang as the tank flew through the air ''like a pinball''. The sensitive fire extinguisher chemicals also filled the air.

One airport worker was killed instantly while two others seriously injured and rushed to hospital. Two others were injured but not critically.

Police said the staff were refilling the tank with FM200, a chemical used for fire suppression, into the fire cylinders located near the air cooling room.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Phichit Angsupanich, Director of Investigation Suvarnabhumi Airport, said: ''The incident happened under the airport while workers were re-filling fire extinguishers.

''There was a catastrophic amount of force from the storage tank resulting in chemicals leaking out. The metal tank spun around the room, it was spinning like a pinball out of control.''

The area was sealed off but no flights were affected.
