Tourists were stunned after the rotting carcass of a mystery sea creature washed up on a beach.

Shocked holidaymakers notice the large white blob when it appeared on the beach in Pattaya, Thailand, at, filling the air with a strong smell.

Locals called police who arrived with rescue workers who hauled the two-metre long creature off the sand and into a truck to be taken away for examinations.

Russian beachgoer Sergei Mikhailov said: ''All I saw at first was the white skin. I thought it was a human so I went over to look. Then I noticed the long tail and a kind of fur that was falling off.

''The smell of the dead animal was very bad. There were people sunbathing and they had to walk away.''

Police suggested the rotting marine creature was a dolphin that had died between three and five days previously before washing up on the sand.

Somchai Inrueng, head of the Pattaya City local council, said: ''Police and staff from the Department of Environmental resources co-ordinated to cover the animal with canvas before a truck arrived to remove it.

''A food seller in the area made the first report that it was a large fish. But we think it could be a dolphin. Since dolphins are a protected species we will investigate the cause of death and identify the type of animal.''
