It's very rare to see a horseshoe crab swimming because they hardly ever do. When they do swim, they swim upside down. I've spent most of my 50 plus years on the water and have only seen a horseshoe crab swim a couple times.
The horseshoe crab has been around for 200 million years before the dinosaurs. Their blood is highly valued in the medical industry and is worth $15,000 per quart.
Recently a synthetic alternative has been being adopted in favor of the horseshoe crab's blood.
They shed their exoskeleton regularly as they grow.
