David Wise, an American professional skier, broke the record for the highest air performed on a quarterpipe at the Audi Nines event in Austria.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist has logged the highest air to date executing this style of jump. Wise record-setting elevation reached 11.7-metres (38"4).

Audi Nines is an exclusive weeklong freestyle progression session for skiers and snowboarders. Wise took advantage of optimal weather conditions to test out the event’s towering 10-metre-high quarterpipe. As his peers cheered him on, he quickly began rocketing to extraordinary heights.

"It´s scary, for sure, like there is a moment when your mind just goes into autopilot and you go way too fast on your feature, so you don´t let yourself be afraid. This is nuts, this is beyond crazy and when you are in the air, it feels fine, then you grab the tail and it feels good," said Wise.

A quarterpipe is a jump where a rider launches vertically off a convex-shaped ramp and lands back on the same surface he or she departed from. The ramp on which Wise achieved his high air was a modified version, with a banked landing surface to increase the safety of the jump.

The American added: "I landed some of my favourite tricks of the year on jumps this morning and then came out and decided once the sun was shining to hit the quarterpipe in the afternoon and ended up setting ourselves a new world record on the quarterpipe, so we are pretty hyped about that."

This stunning footage was captured on Sunday, April 21.
