This is the revolting moment black sewage was seen pouring onto a beach in south Thailand, prompting tourists to be banned from swimming.

The filthy water came gushing from a pipe into the sea at the Na Jomtien beach in Chonburi, Thailand, on Saturday afternoon (May 18).

Environmental officials arrived and urged holidaymakers near the popular resort to avoid going into the sea.

The beach was closed off while workers investigated the foul-smelling pollution and took samples to a laboratory.

Angry locals branded a beach a ‘’cesspool’’ and said they would never set foot in the sea.

Thira Kitmanee said: ‘’I’ve lived here for more than five years and have never gone in the sea. After seeing this I don’t think I ever will.’’

Writing online, one expat said: ‘’Wongamat Beach, Pattaya Bay and Jomtien Beach are nothing but cesspools with the clueless city officials always turning their heads doing nothing to solve this issue.’’

Officials said the black gunge was made up of waste from house, restaurants, and hotels in the busy tourist area.

The sewage leak is believed to have been caused by untreated waste water from an abandoned treatment facility in the area leaking into the sea through an open sewer after heavy rain.

Workers banned anyone from going in the sea on Saturday but then lifted the ban on Monday, but warned people with allergies not swim in the sea.

Sattahip district Chief Officer Anucha Inthasorn said workers would try to prevent the waste from appearing again.

The region’s Pollution Control Department boss Pralong Damrongthai said the problem was partly due to the lack of a wastewater treatment system and urged local organisations to solve the issue.
