Rescue operation after car plunges into canal in Ontario, Canada

Footage of rescue teams searching a river in Welland, ON, Canada on Sunday after witnesses reported a sinking car.

As the search began, two firefighters, dressed in survival suits, broke the thin layer of ice and used long poles to try and locate the car in the water.

According to deputy fire Chief Brian Kennedy, after more than an hour searching on the water, firefighters were pulled to shore.

Police divers arrived on scene just after 7pm (local time) and recovered a body from the car shortly before 9pm.

Investigations are on-going to identify the driver of the car and to understand the cause of the fatal accident.
