Male body pulled from car in canal in North Tonawanda, NY
North Tonawanda police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found inside a car that sunk in the Erie Canal late Saturday.
The North Tonawanda Police, North Tonawanda Fire Department, City of Tonawanda Dive Rescue Team and Ellicott Creek Volunteer Fire Department Dive Rescue team responded at 10:58 p.m. Saturday at the Service Drive boat docks for a report of a vehicle that entered the canal.
North Tonawanda Police Capt. Thomas Krantz said the car was first seen floating in the canal with its headlights on. At this time, he said investigators are unaware of anyone who actually witnessed the vehicle enter the canal.
When first responders arrived on the scene, the car was in the middle of the canal between NT and Tonawanda. Krantz said emergency response personnel were unable to get to the vehicle before it sank.
Upon further investigation, police determined that the car was reported stolen out of the City of Buffalo at 7:33 PM on Saturday. A deceased male was found inside the vehicle, according to police.
Krantz said a preliminary identification was made of the male and the name will not be released until the identity has been confirmation and his family has been notified. The matter remains under investigation.
