Motorcyclists still riding on pavements in Thailand despite fines being doubled
Motorcyclists are still riding illegally on footpaths in Thailand despite a doubling of the fine for doing so.
These reckless road users were filmed in the Huai Kwang area of Bangkok, where authorities are desperate to stop people from riding on pavements.
Despite a warning on Thursday 25 July that fines for the offence would double from 1,000 baht (32 US dollars) to 2,000 baht, many carried on with the practice.
Sakoltee Phattiyakul, Bangkok’s deputy governor, said: "A lot of riders are still using footpaths to avoid traffic, despite the 1,000 baht fine."
"The authority also plans to release a mobile phone application, so citizens can send in photos and help identify the illegal motorcycle riders", he added.
Officials said that between July 2018 and July 2019, 20,659 motorcyclists were caught riding on footpaths. Of these 4,197 were given warnings and 14,878 faced legal action. The remaining 1,784 were already in legal proceedings.
