The Geysir Geothermal Area in in the Haukadalur valley in south-west Iceland is world famous, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Strokkur (Icelandic for “churn”) is the primary attraction, and is the most reliable large geyser there, blasting boiling water and steam 15-20 metres skywards every five to ten minutes. In addition to the Strokkur Geyser, there are hot springs and fumaroles that vent steam throughout the area. Prior to eruptions, the geyser pool pulsates gently. An eruptions happens when superheated steam rising from below pushes the water in the pool above into a large dome - the steam then bursts through, driving much of the water from the pool skywards. Although there are well-defined pathways, viewing zones and signs warning of the dangers of hot water, some people inevitably stand too close and downwind as Strokkur erupts, putting themselves at risk.
