This is the adorable moment a mother hippo gave birth in her enclosure's pool in Khon Kaen Zoo, northeastern Thailand on Tuesday (November 5) afternoon. 

The mother, Lek, was in labour under a minute before the baby emerged in the water and swam with her mother. 

Zookeepers prepared a celebratory meal featuring watermelon, sweetcorn, bananas and tomatoes for the adorable baby hippo and her mother.

They named the baby Nam. 

Thanachon Kenasing, director of the Khon Kaen Zoo, said that it is a pleasure to have the newborn hippo join its collection of animals. 

He added: ''The mother is 21 and this is her second child. The father is 10 years old.

''The baby hippopotamus is healthy and strong. Vets will watch her closely while she stays with her mother.

''She will be a wonderful addition to the zoo and help us to learn more about the species.''
