Maggot caterpillars are considered disgusting animals because they live in dirty places, but this maggot caterpillar turned out to have economic value because it can handle the effects of organic waste and can be used as alternative animal feed.

As was done by Gushendri, a resident of Tanah Garam, Lubuak Sikarah sub-district, Solok city. Since three months ago he started to cultivate maggots or magot behind the yard of his house.

His interest in raising maggots is due to the high perceived cost of feed, so he then tries to look for other alternatives so that his animal feed needs can still be met.

According to Gushendi, even this cultivation of magot is quite easy, because it is done by collecting organic waste which he leaves in a shelter that is covered with tarpaulin, then from the trash will appear caterpillars or maggots.

Gushendri said, the maggot itself is very suitable as an alternative feed for livestock such as poultry and fish, because it has a high protein content, besides that raising this magot can also reduce the burden of the cost of feed that he spends every week by thirty percent.

Meanwhile, the maggots cultivation effort also received support from the local community pillars chief, because it was considered very beneficial for the community, besides being able to reduce the impact of organic waste, this maggot was also economically valuable as animal feed for the community.

Gushendri hopes that the current maggots cultivation business will continue to grow and get support from all parties, because with the existence of the cultivation, it can at least ease the cost of feed for farmers, especially for poultry and fish farmers.

Question: Where did this maggot idea come from?
Answer: starting from seeing the obstacles of farmers in general throughout Indonesia, we are constrained by the cost of feed, so many farmers are out of business because the cost of feed is rising. After I did various researches, I saw a way to reduce the cost of feed up to 30%, after I searched on YouTube there was a way to raise BSF maggot or black fly blac soulder fly. after I examined the proten content in BSF maggot is quite high, from there we can cut the cost of the feed.

Question: how long does the process take to harvest?

answer: from eggs to harvest we need at the latest 23 days, after 23 days he becomes flies approximately 2 weeks, becomes flies again and lays eggs again and so on.

Question: how much can you save?

Answer: I have practiced and can save the cost of feed around 30% per kilo, imagine if we use a lot, what percentage can we cut from the cost of feed.
What we need to provide are broodstock cages and maggot shelters.
in the brood stock we can produce eggs, from the new eggs we transfer to the maggot media, so we have to provide two places, a cage and a magot shelter. Magot, he likes organic things, such as organic garbage, vegetables, fruits and animal waste.
Question: How long have you been producing this?
Answer: I have been producing this for about 3 months.
