A huge Rhino bull goes from asleep to angry in seconds

The Square-lipped (or White) Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is severely threatened by poaching, and sightings of them are eagerly sought by visitors to game parks. This Rhino family of three was dozing in the shade in Kruger National Park, South Africa, on a hot, windy afternoon. Stable groups of Square-lipped Rhinos are known as “crashes”. Bulls are usually territorial and solitary, only associating with females in oestrus, so this trio of a large bull together with a cow and her calf is unusual. We were parked more than 30 metres away, engine off, enjoying the peaceful scene with dozing Rhinos and grazing Impalas. The male (bull) Rhino was some distance away from the cow and her calf. His hide was covered in biting flies called clegs, and he had adult and immature Red-billed Oxpeckers hunting for parasites on him. The bull suddenly got up, and stood watching us for a while before he suddenly began moving towards the driver’s door of our vehicle, clearly annoyed at our presence. I quickly started the car and moved out of his way – when a grumpy Rhino wants you to move, you do!
