When Rhinos fight, stay out of the way!

The White or Square-lipped Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is the largest living Rhinoceros species. They are often seen together in pairs or larger groups, or in this case a group of two mature males and one immature male. White Rhinos are generally peaceful – we saw this group sleeping huddled together the day before. However, on this day something had changed, and the two mature males faced off against each other without either animal dominating – a rare sight. The young male seemed worried by the conflict and kept shadowing the large males as they clashed horns, pushed and occasionally chased each other for about 20 minutes. Despite the conflict, both large males occasionally took a mouthful of grass! The Rhinos then moved to cross the road, but people watching from the vehicles at the scene got too close and had to back off. The trio finally moved off the tarred road into the grass on the other side where they seemed to settle down and began grazing again.
