Non-venomous Carpet Pythons (Morelia spilota ) are widespread throughout mainland Australia, occurring in a wide range of habitats. The subspecies vary greatly in pattern and colouration, but most have the reticulated pattern reminiscent of old-fashioned carpets – hence their common name. Carpet Pythons are large snakes, averaging about 2.4 metres (nearly 8 feet) long. They have prominent temperature-sensing labial (lip) pits and kill their prey (mostly birds, small mammals and reptiles) by constriction. This beautiful Carpet Python (Morelia spilota imbricata) was found crossing a dirt road in southern Western Australia. This western race of the Carpet Python is regarded as near-threatened because of habitat loss.
