Charities are helping out Thai elephant camps who are struggling from the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 85 elephant centres in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, have spent most of their funds taking care of their jumbos without income to support them after they had to temporarily close due to COVID-19 restrictions.

However, their struggles are now expected to ease slightly after the Save Elephant Foundation distributed money to camps on Tuesday morning (May 5).

A 390,000THB (GBP 9,656) cheque was given to Mae Sa elephant camp director Anchalee Kalamapichit, who will distribute the cash among camps in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the other camps to thank the foundation, Anchalee said: "We are grateful for the generosity of people and the foundation that worried about the elephants."

The president of the foundation, Sangduen Chailert, said that the money came from donations across the world to help take care of the jumbos.

He said: "We have received numerous donations from people across the world as they were worried about the well-being of the elephants.

"We have handed over the money to several camps in Thailand. We have given away 7.5million THB (GBP 185,701) so far to help more than 1,500 elephants."
