Activists launched a hunger strike outside the Thai government offices following protests at the weekend.

The group are demonstrating the military regime, which seized power following a coup in 2014 and won controversial elections in 2019.

They claim that the government lead by career-soldier General Prayut Chan-o-cha has arrested critics, lacked accountability and widened the country's economic divides.

Speaking in the video, Pumiwat Rangkasiwit said: ''I'm here in the front of the Thai parliament holding a hunger strike against our government. The government doesn't serve us, doesn't serve the poor.

''I want Thailand to be democratic like the UK and in Europe.''

A petition from the protesters was received by the Prime Minister's Office’s vice minister, Suporn Atthawong, who invited the leaders to discuss their complaints.

Hundreds of protesters gathered in the capital Bangkok on Saturday (July 18) to take part in demonstrations which went on until nightfall. There were similar scenes in Chiang Mai province the following day.
