This is the moment Brazilian pro surfer Maya Gabeira broke her own world record for the largest wave surfed.

According to Guinness World Records, Gabeira beat her previous record by five and a half feet with a confirmed measurement of 73.5 foot (22.4 metres).

Footage filmed on February 11 in Nazaré, Portugal shows Gabeira ride the monster wave before being engulfed as it crashes down.

Guinness confirmed the record for the largest wave surfed – unlimited (female) on Thursday (September 10).

Filmer Pedro Miranda tells the story behind the epic ride: "I’ve filmed both Maya’s World Record back in 2018 and to be honest, this year’s wave looked bigger at first sight.

"Maya charged the wave behind the peak and drawn a beautiful yet very aggressive line, she rode the most critical part of the wave on a flawless way, for sure one of the biggest and most spectacular waves I’ve ever captured out there."

In 2018, Gabeira rode a 68-foot wave which was entered as the Guinness World Records for the largest wave surfed by a female.

Brazilian Big Wave Surfer Maya Gabeira isn’t afraid of facing heavy waters. Back in January 2018, Gabeira rode down a gigantic 68-foot wave at the legendary Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal. Her memorable ride has become the official Guinness World Record for the “largest wave surfed (unlimited) – female”, changing forever the way women’s are perceived inside one of the most dangerous sports on earth, Big Wave Surfing.

Two years later, in February 2020, Gabeira may have just beaten her own personal record, taking into a massive wave during the "WSL Nazaré Challenge” Big Wave event. The wave is now one of the 3 only nominees for this year's "Women’s Biggest Wave” award, and an official measurement will be disclosed on 17th August during the WSL Big Wave Awards, any number above 68-foot will result in a new world record. The other 2 waves under scrutiny are both from French Big Wave Surfer, Justine Dupont, all 3 waves nominated were ridden in Nazaré - Portugal, a place that became the worldwide Mecca for Big Wave ridding.

When asked about a potential new world record with this wave, Miranda stated “I don’t like to go into speculations, the official measurements will be presented by the WSL in just a few days, whoever wins, Maya or Justine, it will be fair, those girls are breaking the boundaries of the sport and it’s a pleasure to capture those special moments."

Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time, in 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot.
