This amazing lizard swivels its eyes to look backwards!
Flap-necked Chameleons (Chamaeleo dilepis) are truly extraordinary lizards that live in sub-Saharan Africa. They are mostly arboreal, and they are able to change both colour and skin pattern to blend with their surroundings. This camouflage makes them very difficult to find unless they are caught crossing an open area, like this one. In addition to being able to change colour, chameleons are able to swivel their eyes independently through about 180 degrees. We found this adult Flap-necked Chameleon crossing a dirt road in Kruger National Park. It kept an eye on us, looking backwards as it moved away in typical chameleon fashion, rocking back and forth before taking the next step.
