Businesses closed for the final time (24th Sept) as the Elephant and Castle shopping centre which opened in 1955 is no more.
A controversial plan to redevelop the shopping centre into a university campus, retail units and almost 1000 new homes was approved in 2018 but was objected to by local communities.
Critics of the scheme say the number of homes proposed by the property developer Delancey did not meet the council’s policy for the area, which states that 35% affordable housing should be provided, 50% of which should be for social rent. Delancey has proposed 35% affordable, but only 12% will be for social rent.
Forty of the centre's existing traders have also not been offered alternative retail space.
