Thousands of locals celebrated the end of the Buddhist lent with ancient lighting balls made from a rare 'Toom Ka' fruit.

Tourists gathered in Yasothon, northeastern Thailand, to watch the unusual illuminations.

The celebration has been held from September 28 to October 2 with residents flocking to light their Toom Ka, which is made of dried fruit from Strychnine trees, before it is displayed around the festive alley.

Footage from October 1 shows hundreds of beautiful dancers performing a traditional dance from the Isan northeast region with elegant silk costumes.

People were seen enjoying posing with traditional Toom Ka lights and some were enjoying street food being sold at the event.

Deputy governor Somphet Soisaku said: "This is one of the most unique festivals for residents. We hope the celebrations can continue for many generations.''

Buddhists believed that the dried fruits of Toom Ka symbolized the goodness of life because they had practiced lighting the candle in the fruits as they did not have electricity in history.
