Air Force pilots were rescued after their training plane crashed into a swamp in India.

The Pipistrel Virus SW80 was on a routine training mission when it experienced a technical malfunction near Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday.

Footage shows the pilots and emergency responders soaked in water as they walk across the shallow wetland while locals cheer in the background.

An incident report from the Aviation Safety Network stated: 'A Pipistrel Virus trainer came down in a pond following a loss of engine power. Photos from the scene suggest the pilot activated the airframe parachute.'

Residents, police, and emergency teams rushed to the scene shortly after the landing. Both pilots were rescued safely and unharmed. No civilian injuries or property damage were reported.

The Indian Air Force confirmed the two-seater aircraft had developed a technical issue and had landed as a precaution.

A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the malfunction.
