Man goes viral using cold weather to simply show effectiveness of face masks

Tired of how the wearing of masks has been politicised during the COVID pandemic, this Canadian man decided to show just how easy it is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the protective gear.

Footage from November 10 shows Michael Becker exhaling and the cold and condensation from his breath being highlighted in the cold weather, but once he applies a face mask there is hardly any condensation.

The short video went viral online earning over one million views. It visually explains the effectiveness of protective face masks as many countries enter the second wave of COVID-19 infections, as temperatures plummet in the northern hemisphere.

However, not everyone is convinced. Some Twitter users have responded by making unfounded claims.

One said: "All that carbon dioxide is going right back into your lungs. Thanks for showing me how dangerous masks really are. Now I know for a fact that I can get CO2 poisoning from wearing one."

While another claimed: "Your[sic] actually building condensation on the inside of your mask with the temperature that is outside you'll have pneumonia by the end of the day."

Any negative associations with wearing masks have been widely debunked.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said in their research on masks: "Experimental and epidemiological data support community masking to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

"The prevention benefit of masking is derived from the combination of source control and personal protection for the mask wearer."
